Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos presented Saturday a five-step plan for improving security on Colombia’s San Andres Island, where two Argentine tourists were assaulted last month.
San Andres, located in the Colombian Caribbean, is one of the country’s leading tourist attractions, the reason why alarms went off when an Argentine suffered gunshot wounds while trying to defend his girlfriend during a robbery last August, a crime that came on the heels of a 23-year-old man being murdered on the island.
In response to those incidents, Santos announced Saturday after a Security Council meeting on the island that five measures will be taken in the area, notable among them being a plan to seize illegal weapons.
“We must do much more so that weapons can be confiscated, so the plan for a San Andres without arms is effective, so that hopefully not a single weapon will exist here on San Andres,” the president said.
Resources of the Attorney General’s Office will also be stepped up, the investigation of crimes by police will be strengthened and even the flow of traffic will be improved, since local authorities have problems identifying motorcycles and vehicles used to commit crimes.
After the Argentine tourists were assaulted, a review of the number of crimes committed on San Andres was carried out that showed 11 homicides recorded so far this year on the island, compared with 8 in 2013, Santos said.
