Water levels in Cuba’s more than 900 reservoirs stood at only 54 percent as of Aug. 31, the National Institute for Water Resources, or INRH, said Wednesday.
The figure represents a decline of 126 million cubic meters from the end of July and is below the historical average for August, INRH said.
Even though August’s rainfall was more abundant than July’s, more than half of the 100 drainage basins that provide drinking water are in deficit or moving in that direction and the Cuban government has urged the population to restrict consumption.
Average rainfall countrywide last month was 143.9 millimeters (5.6 inches), or 89 percent of the historical average for August, INRH said.
While central and eastern provinces actually saw above-average precipitation last amount, the western third of the island received only 74 percent of the normal August rains.
