It’s a crazy world out there. It seems like every day there is something new: natural disasters, global warming, disease outbreaks, war and violence. You never know when or where these events are going to strike. We have seen the disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Katrina and recent earthquakes in Japan and the pacific. It is always a good idea to be prepared.

Be prepared

We should all have items in our homes, or cars, that will help us in any situation, including a first aid kit. While it may seem obvious, sometimes it is easy to overlook. But a first aid kit is always, always helpful to have. Get one for your home and one for your car.

You can buy bug out bags for almost every disaster setting. There are urban, earthquake preparedness, and even military grade bug out bags. Shop online for the variety you want. Bug Out Bags often come with 72 hours of survival materials you may need.

Items for flooding

  • Potable water: potable water is key to have in disaster areas affected by flooding. Try to keep at least a 3 day supply of clean, potable water to keep your body hydrated. During flooding, water often becomes contaminated and full of bacteria. It is not safe to drink! Never drink flood water.
  • Sanitation items: flood water is filled with bacteria and sometimes awful bacteria like E-Coli. It is important that you bring sanitary items to keep yourself clean and germ free. Bleach, hand wipes, baby wipes and feminine products (if neccessary) are all good to have in case of a flooding emergency.
  • Non perishable food items : have a 3 day supply of food to sustain you until help can be found or you can connect with fellow survivors. You want canned goods, dehydrated foods and high energy foods like energy bars, protein bars and granola bars.

Build your own Bug out Bag

If you want to make your own bug out bag specific to your tastes and desires, you can do this easily. Purchase an empty, durable bag and get started. Here’s what you should include in your bug out bag:

  • Water: have a minimum of 1 liter of water per person. Try to pack around 3 liters of drinkable water in your bug out bag. Also include water filtration devices such as iodine tablets or camping filters.
  • Food: remember to bring nonperishable foods that will last. You also want to include high energy foods that provide you with the energy and protein you need to keep your body strong. Freeze dried back pack meals are also convenient meals that take boiling water to heat up.
  • Clothing: pretend you are going on a weekend backpacking trip. You should make sure you have a sturdy pair of boots or shoes, a long sleeve shirt, a t-shirt, a pair of pants, two pairs of socks and long underwear. Consider the elements you will be in. Mountains? Desert? Urban terrain? Consider this while packing.
  • Shelter: you will want to stay safe, warm and dry. Bringing a tarp is a great way to build a temporary shelter to protect you through the night. Also bring a bedroll or some kind of pad for you to sleep on.
  • Basics: bring at least two flashlights with backup batteries; at least three different ways you can start a fire and rain gear to keep you dry for at least three days.

What if you are in transit?

What if you are on the road when disaster strikes? You want to make sure that you have the tools you need to keep moving and stay safe. Keep a bug out bag in your car at all times. It is a good idea to have one at home and one in your trunk or backseat. If you are riding in a car or on a motorcycle, will you be able to keep going? What if a part breaks? You should also have basic automotive or motorcycle parts with you. During disaster time, having access to transportation is critical. You will have an advantage being able to move and leave from dangerous places.

Be Ready

During disaster times, societal structure falls apart. It can be chaotic and it will not always be easy to get the supplies you need so it is always a good idea to have them ahead of time. Plan accordingly and pack the items you will need to survive.
