The eviction of some 200 families that had invaded a building in downtown Sao Paulo sparked conflict Tuesday between homeless activists and police on the streets of the principal business district of Brazil’s largest city.
Police used an armored car to break into the 22-story building on downtown Sao Joao avenue that was invaded six months ago by close to 200 families and where squatters resisted eviction Tuesday by throwing everything available at the cops.
After their expulsion, a city bus was burned at the entrance of the nearby Municipal Theater, a Sao Paulo landmark.
Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to expel the people resisting eviction, who then damaged city property and attacked several stores that had closed their doors.
Two police were injured in the clash and a pregnant woman also required medical attention, Col. Glauco Silva de Carvalho, who was in command of the operation, told reporters.
At least two people were detained for their part in the disturbances.
Several people who were not among the squatters “took advantage” of the disorder to attack the police by throwing objects at them, according to a police spokesperson.
