French reject terrorists call to define themselves
Words matter. We’ve heard that phrase often, especially in political discussions.
As an example, pro-abortion factions despise being called that more honest description, preferring instead to hide behind the word, “choice.” The baby, whose life is terminated never gets to decide in that “choice” and in fact, is never actually referred to as a baby. The term “fetus,” devoid of sentiment, comes in handy in that context.
Any number of similar word plays spring to mind when discussing turns of phrase and definitions. The one we focus on today comes via the administration of French President Francois Hollande, and is brilliant in its simplicity.
The Islamic extremist terrorist group grabbing headlines with its bloody brutality and escalating threats of violence is alternately referred to as ISIS, IS, or as the Obama administration prefers, ISIL. —- Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The terrorists refer to themselves by the imposing term, “Islamic State,” representing the compulsory Sharia caliphate they envision having ultimate global dominance.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was quoted recently in France 24, definitively stating, “This is a terrorist group and not a state. I do not recommend using the term Islamic State because it blurs the lines between Islam, Muslims and Islamists. The Arabs call it ‘Daesh’ and I will be calling them the ‘Daesh cutthroats.’ ”
The Washington Post admits, “That logic is certainly understandable, and the French aren’t alone in bristling at the idea that an extremist group gets to take the moniker “Islamic State.”
The militants reportedly despise the name “Daesh,” an acronym used by Israel and Arab nations, which they consider a slur. According to this AP report, militants have threatened to cut out the tongue of anyone who uses the name, declaring it shows disrespect and defiance.
Yet another threat that clearly establishes what these Daesh cutthroats are all about.
