According to a recently published report, that report states September 2, 2014 – MEXICO – Mexican authorities said on Monday that thousands of fish found dead in a lake in western Mexico did not die of natural causes. Over 53 metric tons of rotting fish have been removed so far from Lake Cajititlan in western Jalisco state.
“There are more (of which says the City). Just last Tuesday filled nine trucks, one of seven other four tons. This is critical,” said Octavio Cortes, president of the fishermen’s cooperative in the village of Cajititlán.
This is the fourth time so far this year a fish kill Cajititlán is recorded and in the town of Cuexcomatitlán, also located on the banks of the lagoon.
Representatives of the Office of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Environment and Territorial Development of the State and of the State Unit of Civil Protection, toured the bank and coordinated the cleanup, along with the city.
The operating more than 150 people between forest brigade, fishermen and volunteers participated settlers.

It is pretty common for entire lakes to dies off in a day due to algae blooms caused by fertilizer running off into the lakes. When the algae bloom gets too bad it will deplete the oxygen in the water causing a mass die off of fish. Of course there are many other things it could be but this is the most common.
