As I was wrapping this piece up and about to submit it, an astounding news release came to my attention. NASA just held a two-day symposium title, ‘Preparing for Discovery’ in which they brought scientists, church leaders, philosophers, et al., together to discuss the probable future contact with alien life and intelligence out there.
NASA has never held such a conference nor made such obvious allusions to extraterrestrial life before. With this in mind I present the following article.
One of the silliest conspiracy theories cooked up, by one agent provocateur or another, is that the US government has a secret space program. Well, duh…the Department of Defense (DOD) has always been intertwined with NASA, a fact made clear by the National Aeronautic and Space Act. (see below)
The mainstream media was given the public relations job of promoting the civilian-side of NASA when it was founded. That mandate is right up front in the congressionally approved charter. But the media has seldomly focused on the secret, DOD-side of the space agency’s operations, which immediately follows those terse sentences with a large paragraph.
The Pentagon has routinely conducted clandestine, space missions that only those with high level security clearances know about, ever since day one right up to the present.
Given those facts, why would the US government need to conduct another secret space program since it already has one? But come to think of it, planting that conspiracy notion in the mass mind deflects attention away from the actual, secret space program.
In fact NASA and the DOD have conducted joint research all along because the former has always been a part of the overall national security strategy. Now, let’s turn to the NASA charter to confirm the above assertions.
‘‘…a civilian agency exercising control over aeronautical and space activities sponsored by the United States, except that activities peculiar to or primarily associated with the development of weapons systems, military operations, or the defense of the United States (including the research and development necessary to make effective provision for the defense of the United States) shall be the responsibility of, and shall be directed by, the Department of Defense…” (NASA Space Act)
Were we, the public, ever informed about the missions or parts of missions that fell under the broad DOD/NASA umbrella?
The above provisions make it quite clear, that from the very beginning NASA had a split personality and the right hand never knew what the left hand was up to. The wording is so broad that any administrator could interpret any part of any mission as falling under the DOD mandate. NASA department heads could withhold any information they chose from public disclosure.
There never has been any need to engage in any additional secret programs since NASA and the DOD were legally mandated to conduct them. Still don’t believe that NASA has always been in bed with the DOD playing a direct role in national security and keeping many of its missions and their findings from public disclosure?
The DOD has made its most direct use of NASA equipment in utilizing the Space Shuttle to bring up numerous clandestine mission (heavy) payloads. The contents of many of these payloads are strictly classified. There were 10 dedicated DOD shuttle launches: STS 51C, 51J, 27, 28, 33, 36, 38, 39, 44, and 53 (STS, which stands for Space Transportation System, also known as the Space Shuttle).
The public, you and I, do not and will not know much if anything about what those joint NASA-DOD missions involved, period. This author would call that a secret space program. The fact is that even if NASA concealed what the space agency found on the Moon or Mars, etc., they have the legal right and authority to classify their findings under the DOD-side of the congressional mandate.
Well, the situation is even more complicated than that. While NASA and the DOD have routinely conducted joint missions, the military also has its own separate, and yes, secret space program. So really the United States government has one quasi civilian-DOD/military space program and one strictly military space program.
As was pointed out early in this piece, NASA and the DOD are completely intertwined, joined at the hip as it were. To grasp the situation in its simplest terms, picture the NASA Space Shuttle as a transport truck that hauled the heavy DOD secret payloads. The majority of the astronauts have always been military personnel (and a few scientists) all with top secret clearances.
Next, to complete the picture, imagine a stubby-winged spacecraft similar to the Space Shuttle sitting on the launch pad as the Air Force X-37 was in 2010. All that the mass media knew of this project’s mission was its launch date, its cost and ultimate objectives were top secret. Here is the proof that the US government does indeed have a secret, military space program- do we need more or is all that just misdirection?
But as the author mentioned above, it actually has two. One is just embedded in the civilian program. The other is overtly a secret, military operation. You and I may know that these entities exist, but we are never going to know exactly what they do, what technology they use and what they discover…if the DOD does not want us to know.
Once again, the author would call that a secret space program, though paradoxically in your face and in plain sight…well sort of. If one needs further documentation of the Pentagon’s separate space program, you need only turn to the National Security Space Road Map website and read the following paragraph:
“The Space Test Program (STP) is a part of the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, Space and Missile Test and Evaluation Directorate located at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The DoD Space Test Program was created in May 1965 as a multi-user space program whose role is to be the primary provider of spaceflight for the entire Department of Defense space research community…”
The US government never needed to create a separate, secret space program since they had several. We should be wondering why these so-called conspiracy theorists are not pointing to these facts, but instead are pointing the fingers of misdirection away from them….
