Presumably due to some technical issues, the National Instant Criminal Background Check system for gun purchases has been down this morning, for the third day in a row.
“I have just been notified that the NICS will be going out of service. No indication right now as to how long. I will let you know when I get notice of the system coming up,” said Kimberly Brown, NICS federal firearms license liaison. She added, “This does include NICS E-Check as well.”
The outage was reported about 9:30 am this morning. NICS was also down for about 30 minutes to an hour yesterday morning, and a few hours Sunday morning as well.
The source of yesterday’s problem was a major system upgrade implemented to one of the agency’s databases, the FBI said.
“(The upgrade) did cause some issues (Sunday) and the NICS was out of service for a few hours (Sunday) morning. Some issues persist with one of the databases that the NICS relies upon to conduct background checks,” said FBI spokeswoman Jill Montgomery via email yesterday.
