When most people think about the back-to-school season, what comes to mind are new school supplies, new teachers and new classmates – not new breeds of toxic weed killers.
Yet a recent EWG analysis found that 3,247 elementary schools are within 1,000 feet and 487 are within 200 feet of a corn or soybean field that could be sprayed with the toxic chemical 2,4-D if the EPA approves Dow Chemical Co.’s newest herbicide, Enlist Duo.
Exposure to 2,4-D has been linked to Parkinson’s disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and reproductive and immune system problems. Children are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of pesticides, and we should and must do everything we can to protect them.
Dow got one step closer to making Enlist Duo a reality when the USDA recommended deregulating new varieties of genetically engineered corn and soybeans just last month. Time is running out for us to put a stop to this, Friend.
Enlist Duo would pose a significant health risk to children 12 and younger. According to a University of Minnesota study, in fact, young children growing up on farms using relatively small amounts of 2,4-D on their fields have higher levels of the chemical in their bodies than older children do.
Here’s the bottom line: The chemical manufacturers behind this toxic weed killer care more about profit than about protecting the health of children, farmers and the environment. That’s why EWG is doing everything we can to stop them. Are you with us?

Thanks for standing up for our kids.
