Three people were arrested Friday in the northern city of Antofagasta while carrying a homemade bomb and explosive materials, Chile’s militarized national police, the Carabineros, said.
The arrest occurred in the wee hours at a checkpoint where a vehicle search uncovered a plastic bottle full of metal shards for shrapnel, dynamite, a system for lighting a slow fuse and a detonation device.
“This is a significant amount of really destructive elements, because this is very high-powered dynamite,” the head of the Carbineros in the area, Gen. Hermes Soto, told the press.
Police checks have intensified nationwide over the past few days, following a bomb attack near a subway station in Santiago on Monday that left 14 people wounded.
Interior Minister Rodrigo Peñailillo said the government will apply the antiterrorism law to the three individuals arrested in Antofagasta.
The Carabineros seized cones of an explosive of high detonation power that they described as “an element much more powerful” and that “would have caused much more damage than the kind used (in last Monday’s attack) in Santiago.”
