“When you are constantly moving forward, searching for the cutting edge, everyone behind you always believes you have gone too far. The further back from the cutting edge they are, the more extreme and, indeed, insane, you appear, to them, to be. In this way, one person’s “madness” can be another’s commonsense.”

According to a recently published report, that report states  Recently, rumors have been swelling of a danger at Yellowstone National Park. That danger? A brewing supervolcano eruption.

The fear of a Yellowstone supereruption, which ultimately went viral, may have begun back in February when a seismometer called B944 began sending senseless data to a public viewer at the University of Utah’s seismographic station, as George Black reports in The New Yorker.

Luckily for most of the U.S., the likelihood this eruption would happen is pretty low: about one in 100,000 any given year. If it did happen, it would be pretty devastating, though.

Supervolcano = super danger

The danger of these eruptions isn’t just lava in the area around the volcano — the ash alone poses a serious threat. Breathing hot ash can result in respiratory burns, and the minerals it contains can irritate the skin and cause abrasions in the eyes and the respiratory system. The pileup of ash on rooftops has resulted in building collapses, and ash accumulation on streets can make roads dangerous, if not impossible, to navigate. And ash in the sky disrupts air travel by blocking visibility and interfering with electronics.

The map at the top shows a simulated distribution of volcanic ash if Yellowstone were to erupt to its full potential. The scale is in millimeters, 25.4 of which make up an inch. So people in the purple area would be coated with more than an inch of ash, while people in the blue areas would find themselves buried in it.

  • Why do they always extend the boundaries of this maps’ range rings to extend out over Las Angeles and San Francisco when everyone knows the dust would have to climb up over the Sierra Nevada Mountain range against prevailing winds and then cross the central valley then climb the coast ranges against the prevailing winds?

    • and the rocky s as well and Cascades mt rang

  • A lot will depend on “upper winds” for this one. According to what type of eruption takes place, pyro flow or venting flows, explosive, etc. A truly explosive eruption could push ash into 100,000 ft levels, where the jet stream could work on them, during certain seasons. The Pyro flow from such a blast would just kill every thing in it’s path and cover the surface at once – this is the true killer of most eruptions. The angle/direction of such a flow would be the deciding factor of life or death for many. (I live about 135 air miles, NW, of this YS park).

    The “length” of the eruption would also greatly influence the deposition pattern due to shifting wind patterns due to weather systems moving from the NW on across Canada/USA, and, as seasons change, these patterns also change (the separation/migration of the North/South jets, etc)- This may be the cause for the model to show such extreme western coverage. Note that there is no “time frame” given on that chart/picture — a few YEARS of eruption, vs say 6 weeks only, will surely cover more ground and deeper. Recorded history has not seen such a major caldera event before.

    Our plans are to LEAVE at ONCE, should anything start venting.. Head NORTH and WEST…thinking Alaska.

    The Ashfall site, Antelope county, Nebraska is an interesting site to visit. Contains many fossils and much info concerning results of an eruption about a 1000 miles away.
