Here are ten cruel, bizarre curses that have rocked this world and make superstitious people even more superstitious than they were before.
In the summer of 2012, the Queen of Thailand (Sirikit) suffered a stroke and has not been seen in public. Her husband, Bhumibol Adulyadeej, is the world’s longest serving head of state and the longest reigning monarch in Thai history; in power for 68 years. The circumstances surrounding her ill health are suspicious. Some conspiracy theorists argue that it was because of a curse that can be traced back to one of most notorious jewel heists in world history.
In 1989, at the Saudi royal family palace, a Thai janitor broke into Prince Faisal’s room and took $20 million dollars in jewellery, which he then smuggled to Thailand in a vacuum bag cleaner. Among the stolen jewels was the 50 – carat gemstone- Blue Diamond. The thief was eventually caught and arrested, but not before he sold some of the stolen treasures on the black market.
Many of the items were returned back to the Saudi Royal Family. However, more than half of the returned items were crude fakes. And the Blue diamond was still nowhere to be found. And so the curse began. In 1990, three Saudi diplomats who were hired to find the Jewels were also shot the same night execution style.
The Saudis believed the executions were related to the curse. The suspicions were fuelled by the reports of high-order women wearing jewels that resembled the Saudi’s prized possessions. The most interesting sighting was of thee elusive Blue Diamond on Queen Sirikrit. When she had a stroke, many argued it was a result of the curse.
Koh-i-Noor Diamond may not be the most well-known diamond. However, it does have a long and detailed history and has certainly been very hard to hold onto. The direct translation of the diamond is “mountain of light”. According to popular beliefs, the gemstone was stolen from Kishna, who was sleeping at the time of the heist. It was then stolen by the Persians, who held it in their possession for 110 years. Then, the East Indian Company got their hands on it and it now is located in England.
All in all, it has belonged to various Hindu, Mughal, Turkic, Afghan, Sikh and British rulers who fought bitterly over it at various points in history and seized it as a spoil of war time and time again.
Known as the Eye of Brahma, this black diamond was found in India in the 1800s. It took its name from Princess Nadia Vyegin-Orlov and was named because of its natural fancy black color. The first two diamonds were purportedly found in a Hindu idol at a shrine near Pondicherry, India where a Hindu monk stole it. The heist summoned a malicious spit to embrace the eye and the eye’s owner. According to sources and historians, Orlov leapt from a building in Rome, Italy after fleeing the Russian Revolution and selling her family jewels. Another previous owner, Leonila Gaitsine—Banatinsky also committed suicide by leaping from a building.
The iceman was found in the Alps between Austria and Italy in 1991. Since his discovery, seven people who found him died in the most unusual circumstances. 4 of the deaths were violent. The first death, in 1992, was Rainer Hennn, the forensic pathologist who put the iceman in a body bag with his bare arms. He was killed in a car crash on his way to a world conference to discuss the discovery. Following Henn, was Kurt Friz, the mountain guide who led Henn to the iceman and uncovered the iceman’s face, died in avalanche. The third was the person who filmed the discovery and he died of brain cancer. The person who found the iceman, Helmut Simon, went missing for 8 days and was eventually found laying face down in a stream after jumping off a 300 foot cliff.
Also referred to as “The Curse of 27”, it describes a group of great celebrities who all died at the age of 27. Generally, when talking about the 27 club, people include the following singers: Robert Johnson (died in 1938 of an unknown cause), Brian Jones (1969, drowned in the swimming pool), Jimi Hendrix (1970, asphyxiated with vomit after having combined sleeping pills and wine), Janis Joplin (1970, heroin overdose), Jim Morrison(1971,heart failure, Kurt Cobain (drug overdose), Heath Ledger. Though these artists are commonly included in the 27 club, the list of singers who died at 27 years old is much longer, including 40 other persons, who were not as popular as the ‘official members”. The most recent member of the club is, sadly, Amy Winehouse who was also 27 years old when she died on July 23, 2011.
