Don’t you just hate it when a movie makes you figure out the plot and ending, and then wham! They main killer is killed off in some gruesome or unexpected plot or a good guy becomes the bad guy. It’s a total surprise to the viewer but an even bigger surprise to the much loved movie character. It’s shocking but most times it also ups the entertainment factor of a film. Here are ten of the most mind-blowing movies that are too perplexed for our eyes.

 

 

10. The Sixth Sense [1999]

What’s so mind-boggling? This movie chronicles a young boy who has an extraordinary power – he communicate with the dead. A child psychiatrist is called to assist the boy with overcoming his fears. As the movie progresses, you begin asking yourself the question that, is the psychiatrist helping the little boy or is he hindering his progress? Towards the end of the movie, the story becomes so perverted that it becomes almost impossible to recall what we have seen in the movie previously. Even after the movie ends, your views on the film might be completely different than others who’ve seen the movie. That the beauty of this mystery drama featuring Bruce Willis. If you like intense drama with a sheer intrigue, don’t miss this one.

9. The Machinist [2004]

What’s so mind blowing about this movie? To make the bizarre-looking character of this movie look ultra-real, Christian Bale lost 27 pounds of his body weight. This converted which him into a fragile and skinny machinist Trevor Reznik. However, in the movie, the insomnia was said to be the main reason of this weight loss of the lead role. His poor health and strange behavior made him into an outcast. The situation got worse when one of the co-worker lost his arm in machine accident because of Trevor’s inability to do work. Later he gets fired, as well.

A series of pasted notes appear frequently on his refrigerator illustrating a game of hangman, which only makes Trevor more paranoid. He spends most of his sleepless nights at the airport café in the company of waitress named Maria, with whom he tries to establish the romantic relationshiplater in the movie. However, the story gets interesting when he is told by the café owner another day that no girl of Maria has ever worked at her place. All of his hallucinations and fantasies were connected to a deep guilt and remorse resulting from a car accident which happened last year.

The film was well received by critics and has a rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 141 reviews with an average rating of 6.6 out of 10 with the consensus: “Brad Anderson’s dark psychological thriller about a sleepless factory worker is elevated by Christian Bale’s astonishingly committed performance.” The film also has a score of 61 out of 100 based on 32 reviews on Metacritic. Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four and stated in his review for the film.

8. American History X [1998]

What’s so mind-boggling? Even if you are one of the very very few people on this planet that hasn’t seen this film, you have probably still heard of it. THE moment. Once again, the real shocks from this film come from elsewhere than the gruesome bits and the reality of Neo-Nazism and its racism makes this film a hard hitter all round. But film history will never forget the moment when assaults a black gang member who is attempting to hijack him, and has him bite the pavement curb, before stomping on his head. This is a moment of contact-violence that reminds us of everything wrong with our society. Nobody wants to see such gruesome images. he film received mostly positive reviews upon release with many critics directing particular praise towards Edward Norton’s performance. Based on the reviews of 82 critics collected on Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of critics gave the film a positive review, making the film “Certified Fresh”, with an score of 7.3/10.

7. The Jacket [2005]

What’s so mind-boggling? A man is killed over and over again, and he resurrects himself everytime. This movie projects time-travel and the human psyche in a complex manner that it makes you use your brain throughout the movie. Nothing in this movie is given to viewers for granted, to understand the story, you have to use your intelligence and keep track of all the scenes. At the end, like other mystery movies, you start developing your own perspective about the ending in general and overall story in particular.

6. Mulholland Drive [2001]

What’s so mind-boggling? This movie draws a line between what you saw in the movie and what you think you saw in the movie. With a series of complicated twists and turns, you start developing theories about the movie. It entangles your imagination and lets you contemplate about the story long after you’ve seen it. Then again, you replay the movie and see where this is going. Obviously, you can’t help yourself because it’s David Lynch’s trademark storytelling technique that leaves you wandering around the actual story. And, by the time you’ve figured it out, someone else will bump into you and give you an entirely different theory. There you go again, you start over with thinking and come up with another theory. That’s the essence of Mulholland Drive.
