At least 11 Colombian Indians died and another 13 were injured when they were struck by lighting during a meeting in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Santa Marta in northern Colombia, millitary officials told Efe Monday.
Members of the indigenous Wiwa community were hit by a lightning bolt around midnight as they were holding a “traditional meeting.”
The injured suffered first- and second-degree burns from the lightning, army Col. Santodomingo, who is stationed in the area, told Efe.
The injured were taken to a specialized medical center in Santa Marta, capital of Magdalena province, in military helicopters in which they were given first aid.
