A magnitude-5.6 earthquake Monday in southern Peru’s Ayacucho region damaged homes and public buildings, authorities said.
The epicenter of the temblor, which occurred at 10:14 a.m. (1514 GMT), was 27 kilometers (17 miles) west of the town of Pausa, the Geophysical Institute of Peru said.
The quake caused damage to six homes, a school and a clinic in Pausa, the Indeci emergency services agency said.
While the earthquake was also felt in other areas of Ayacucho and in the neighboring region of Arequipa, no damage was reported at those locations.
