A magnitude-6 earthquake rocked Peru’s central jungle region early Sunday, causing rockslides on a highway, the Peruvian Geophysics Institute, or IGP, said.
The earthquake happened at 5:45 a.m. and had its epicenter 57 kilometers (35 miles) west of the town of Atalaya in a place near the border between Ucayali and Junin departments, the IGP said.
The quake occurred at a depth of 131 kilometers (81 miles) and was felt in the jungle province of Satipo, located in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers, or VRAEM, region and in Huancayo, the capital of Junin region.
The temblor toppled a wall at a house and caused a rockslide on the highway that links La Merced and Chanchamayo near the Paucartambo bridge, the emergency management office said.
Peru is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent quakes and volcano activity.
The Pacific Ring of Fire accounts for about 85 percent of the world’s seismic activity.
A magnitude-5.6 earthquake injured 16 people in Ica, a region in southern Peru, in February.
