An attempted robbery at a Houston bar early Saturday morning was thwarted when an armed patron fired at the suspects, killing two and sending the other two fleeing.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. as the bar was closing. Two armed men entered the establishment, told everyone to get on the floor and demanded money, while two more men “lingered at the bar door,” according to EJ’s Place owner, Jenny O’Donnell, who was not there at the time but spoke with a head bartender and waitress who were.

But the suspects were caught off guard when a customer at the bar produced a handgun of his own. There was an exchange of gunfire and two of the suspects were shot. Nobody else was injured and the remaining two suspects fled, as did the armed patron.

When officers arrived, they found one deceased suspect right outside of the establishment’s door and a second deceased suspect at the end of the bar’s parking lot.

The armed patron, who O’Donnell calls a hero, was nowhere to be found.

“We’re still trying to determine who he is, and why he left the scene,” Harris County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Spurgeon told KHOU.

But the fact that Texas law prohibits guns in bars, and there’s even a sign on the front door stating so, could explain why the man took off.

According to another customer, the armed patron, who has not been publicly identified, always stays until closing and walks the female employees to their cars. The patron would never start anything, the customer said, but he would always protect his friends.

“He was just trying to protect people, and a lot of times, especially nowadays, that’s what you have to do,” said Rebecca Czarnek, another longtime customer.

The attempted robbery was captured on the bar’s surveillance video and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it’s possible that the four suspects were responsible for other armed robberies which occurred Friday night.

There’s no word on whether or not the armed patron will face any charges.
