British MPs have voted overwhelmingly in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state. A non-binding motion calls on the government to recognize Palestine as a state. The House of Commons debate was initiated by Labour MP Grahame Morris, who said that Britain has a moral responsibility to act because of its history as a colonial power in the region. Supporters of the motion said a successful vote would send a strong message that Palestinian rights are recognized, and that the illegal Israeli settlements have no validity. During the debate, many MPs highlighted the plight of the Palestinians. Members of the government, including Prime Minister David Cameron, abstained from the vote. The world was watching the process, especially since Sweden said it would recognize Palestine earlier this month, angering Israel. Other European countries are likely to follow suit.
