The 57 inmates holding two prison guards hostage since Sunday night freed them Monday and put an end to the fifth riot during the last two months in the southern Brazilian state of Parana, officials said.
The regional Justice Secretariat announced that the prisoners ended the rebellion after local authorities agreed to transfer 20 of the inmates from the State Penitentiary of Maringa to jails in the Parana capital of Curitiba, as well as in Londrina and Foz do Iguacu, so they could be nearer their families.
The rioting broke out at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday when the prisoners’ family visits ended and seven of the inmates captured and disarmed two of the guards and held them hostage.
The was the fifth rebellion in two months in Parana state, including one in August at the jail in the city of Cascavel, the most violent of all, which went on for 45 hours and ended with five prisoners dead.
According to the Justice Secretariat, this year to date there have been 22 prison uprisings in Parana.
Official statistics say that Brazilian prisons hold some 550,000 inmates, about 30 percent over capacity and the fourth largest prison population in the world after the United States (2.2 million), China (1.6 million) and Russia (740,000).
Official statistics also say that last year 282 inmates were killed in violent incidents, which in general were associated with prisoners’ struggles to control drug trafficking and other illegal “businesses” behind bars.
