A selection of hats, scarves and the coats of arms of the four houses of Hogwarts, along with glasses, wigs, pillows…and so on up to 3,097 items that have allowed Menahem Asher Silva Vargas to set the Guinness record for the world’s largest collection of Harry Potter items.
The 37-year-old attorney, who goes by the nickname of Asher Potter, started piling up this collection 14 years ago when he read the first book of the saga created by British writer J.K. Rowling.
“My passion for the story inspired me to keep everything I found related to the magician,” he said in an interview with Efe, while surrounded by numerous elements from his collection, starting with Harry Potter figures and cuttings from newspapers and magazines.
The literary works and their respective movies, which tell “a magical but very human story,” gradually became for him one of the “meanings of life,” until the time came when it was “impossible” to store so many objects.
So he started organizing them and registering them in an inventory with 50 different categories.
Finally, last Sept. 29 when his world record was made official, Silva Vargas says he felt and understood “what magic really is.”
Thanks to the Internet and international exchanges and purchases, objects have come into his hands that appear to be snatched directly from the pages of Rowling, such as Hermione’s Time-Turner, the Marauder’s Map, Rita Skeeter’s Poison Pen and the Nimbus 2001 Racing Broom.
“There’s always something else to get – I don’t think this is ever going to end,” he said.
