Sarasota father returns fatal fire at intruder, whose mom says went to ‘hang out’ (VIDEO)

An early morning home invasion Tuesday in Sarasota, Florida, turned deadly for the intruder and has left the homeowner distraught over the loss of life, but the suspect’s stepmother said things didn’t go down as the homeowner explained.
Around 5:40 a.m., Chris Bane grabbed his gun after he heard glass shatter. As Bane came down the hallway, he discovered Calvin Yoder in his home.
“The burglar fired a shot and the homeowner returned fire, striking and killing the intruder,” Wendy Rose, a spokesperson for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, told a local Fox affiliate. “Apparently the homeowner has been the victim of burglary recently so he was on alert, he was on edge, and as soon as he heard glass breaking he armed himself to protect himself and his 11-year-old child who was in the home.”
Yoder was struck by the gunfire and died from his injuries.
According to Rose, Bane had recently purchased the gun after several break-ins, the most recent being Sunday.
Rose said both Bane and his son, who witnessed the shooting, are “shaken up.” The boy will receive counseling, 10 News reported.
Rev. Kelvin Lumpkin, the pastor of Bane’s church, reiterated Rose’s words.
“He is torn up and really wants to convey to the victim’s family how sorry he is about what happened, but felt like he had no choice and was actually returning fire,” said Lumpkin.
Authorities confirmed that Yoder lived near Bane. In fact, Yoder’s stepmother, Tara Wade, said the two were acquainted and Yoder was not breaking into the home.
“He was a good kid, loving, caring, very laid back,” Wade told a local ABC affiliate.
Wade explained that Yoder did not want to go to Bane’s house, but her other son, Leon, convinced him to do so. She said the two were going to Yoder’s place to hang out.
“The next thing I know, his brother came back in and hollered that he’d been shot,” Wade said.
Bane declined to comment on camera, but later wrote an emotional and lengthy Facebook post. He wrote to Yoder’s family that he was “truly sorry,” and added that he couldn’t understand why someone who knew he had a child would enter his home in such a way.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed against Bane.
