I visited several political candidate post election parties last night in Iowa. It seems that the leading candidates simply paint their case with broad brush strokes. They used key phrases like “represent Iowa values”, “repeal “Obamacare”, “cut the pork in Washington”, and even “reduce the size of government”. This haunted my soul with memories of promises past. “Change”. If you don’t recall who promised “change” then there’s little hope that you will even read this article.
I’m left pondering if there is any substantive discussion of the issues. Those issues, most dear to our freedom, which impact all political persuasions, every breathing American, and those who have yet to realize that freedom is at stake in America.
Certainly there was no banter in any of the speeches, which I heard, that spoke about The Chilling Effect or NSA Spying on American Soil. So where exactly are the new breed of promisers, soon to be servants of the people, really planning to take us and how do they plan to really protect us?
The answer to that could constitute a textbook.
Perhaps it will be as simple as following the current administration and presuming we are all terrorists until proven otherwise. After all, since the true terrorists won’t line up to be identified (before they commit an act of terrorism) some in Washington D.C. have already voted that we should database everyone and then follow every little detail of their lives to see if patterns of pre-terrorism emerge.
Mark Lerner has laid out The The Chilling Effect and its impact on Citizens of the United States.
This hits home personally for me. Here’s how.
My aging father, now in his eighties, is driving mom to the Des Moines airport for an afternoon flight to Texas today. The oddity is that dad is NOT flying with her! This past weekend, dad confided in me that they were invited to attend a granddaughter’s graduation from high school but that he decided that he would not fly ever again. His decision is not based on money, because he actually gets flight perks which make his flights free or extremely affordable. He went on to confide:
“I’m done being fondled, raped, background checked, and herded like cattle just for the sake of flying.”
So here we are. A life-long free Citizen of the United States who has embraced The Chilling Effect without even understanding that he has been influenced to change his lifestyle.
Yet, I heard nothing substantive from the political candidates about The Chilling Effect and what they might do to correct it or protect their constituents from it.
