Mexico’s Universidad de Guadalajara on Tuesday demanded answers from authorities in the central state of Guanajuato, where a UG student turned up dead last weekend after spending time in police custody.
The university condemned what it described as the murder of engineering student Ricardo de Jesus Esparza Villegas, who “was arrested by the municipal police of Guanajuato (city) and was found dead a few hours later.”
Esparza and several other UG students arrived in Guanajuato on Saturday for the city’s annual festival dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes, a high-profile cultural event that draws people from around the world.
The municipal administration and the Guanajuato state government must investigate the student’s death, UG said.
Press accounts say that Esparza’s friends went looking for him at a Guanajuato police station, but were told he wasn’t there, even though several witnesses saw cops take him into custody.
Esparza was found dead in an alley Sunday morning. His body bore the signs of an apparent beating.
