Immediately after the 9/11 attacks on the United States, then-President George W. Bush told a joint session of Congress that “either you are with us or you are with the terrorists.”
In those days the battle lines were that clearly drawn. You were on the US team against al-Qaeda or you were on the terrorist team and should expect to be dealt with accordingly.
Those days are long gone, however. In Syria, the US itself has been for years assisting either directly or indirectly affiliates of al-Qaeda seeking to overthrow the Assad government. US allies Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey have been even more explicit in their support for al-Qaeda and even ISIS in Syria.
Instead of attacking ISIS, Turkey is busy bombing the enemies of ISIS and al-Qaeda in Syria, and is demanding a no-fly “humanitarian” corridor — enforced by US warplanes — inside Syrian territory from which it would establish a beachhead to move on Damascus.
Saudi Arabia, a major jewel in the crown of US allies in the Middle East hasdecided on a gruesome beheading followed by a crucifixion of a popular Shi’ite cleric for criticizing the absolute dictatorship of the Sunni ruling family. Very ISIS-like. But no biggie: Saudi Arabia has beheaded 59 people so far this year.
Now we find out how far another jewel in the crown of US allies in the Middle East has strayed. A pro-Israel think tank, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy informs us that Israel is not only providing weapons to the Islamist rebels in Syria, but has entered into a kind of quiet truce with al-Qaeda affiliated Nusra Front. Is Israel with us, with the terrorists, or with us and the terrorists?
Has the world changed or has the US changed? How can you be so affectionate toward al-Qaeda and Islamist extremism and still be “with us” against “the terrorists”? How shocking to be looking back to the Bush Administration for a bit of clarity in the fight against global terrorism…
