Is it necessary to know about foods to cleanse your colon? Does your colon actually need cleansing? It’s actually a matter of some debate. The conventional medical fraternity seems to be of the opinion that colon cleansing is unnecessary. On the other hand, people who are interested in a holistic health lifestyle, and those pursuing a natural health regime seem to be of the opinion that colon cleansing is beneficial.
Whatever the answer, and whichever school of thought you prefer to follow, you can be sure that the foods to cleanse your colon that we will discuss in this article can only benefit your overall health and well being.
Colon Cleanse Food # 1 – Fiber
A diet that is high in fiber is excellent for keeping your digestive system in good working order. It also helps to hold moisture within the colon, which in turn helps to soften any stools, making them easier to pass. Fiber is also believed to have the ability to work rather like a brush in cleaning any food debris from your colon.
Fiber comes in two forms – soluble and insoluble. Soluble dissolves in water, but insoluble does not. Insoluble fiber is a great aid to both preventing and getting rid of constipation, whereas soluble fiber helps to increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. This in turn helps to minimize any harmful bacteria, the likes of E. coli and Salmonella.
Some of the best sources of fiber (both soluble and insoluble) are Flaxseeds and Oats. Oats are great as a breakfast cereal made into porridge, whilst flaxseeds can be sprinkled over porridge, or yoghurt, fresh fruit or salad. Colon Cleanse Food # 2 – Apples
You may have heard this somewhere before, but “an Apple a day keeps the doctor away” – and so it does! Most colon cleansing products that can be bought over-the-counter in health food stores, or stores that sell herbal medicine, contain some form of apple – either juice, extract, or Apple Cider Vinegar. The reason is that Apple is an excellent cleansing food.
As well as being high in fiber, apples also contain pectin which is a carbohydrate compound that acts as a thickening agent in your gut, helping to carry food through your digestive system. One of the great things about Apples is that you can carry them around with you anywhere as an easy, convenient snack-food.
Colon Cleanse Food # 3 – Celery
Celery is also universally recognized as being one of the best foods to cleanse your colon. Like the Apple, it too is high in dietary fiber and easily portable as a snack, anywhere anytime. Another important fact about Celery is that it is one of the few negative calorie foods. In other words, your digestive system uses more calories to process Celery than are actually in the Celery itself. It’s great to include as part of any calorie controlled diet. The act of munching away on a stick of Celery helps your tummy to feel full, but with only 8 calories per stick, it doesn’t really impinge of your daily total calorie intake.
