Alex Noudelman – When Real Life Imitates Art
My name is Alex Noudelman and I am content curator in Canada.
I have recently gotten into watching the show “The Big Bang Theory” which stars Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco and Jim Parson. The show started off with two geeky roommates Sheldon and Leonard, played by Parson and Galecki respectively, meeting their new neighbor, Penny, played by Cuoco.
Leonard had an attraction for Penny since the very beginning whereas Penny just saw him as a friend. He was a science geek after all. A year after Penny had moved in, Leonard finally got the courage to ask her out. She accepted. The date was awkward because it was weird for Penny to go out with a guy who was a good friend. She tried talking to him about it but before she got anywhere, Leonard called her stupid and that was the end of it.
Throughout the following year, despite staying friends, the two went through some awkward moments together. When Leonard announces to Penny that he is going away for three months, Penny starts acting weird around him and it was later revealed that she still had feelings for him. Three months pass and Leonard gets back home. He went to tell Penny he’s back and Penny greeted him with a kiss.
Leonard and Penny then officially became a couple. They had a good relationship for a while, but Leonard went into the relationship in a much faster pace than Penny. When he told her he loved her for the first time, Penny freaked out and simply said “thank you”. Tension started and Penny broke up with Leonard. Both tried to move on from one another. Penny dated a few men, and Leonard went on to have a long-term relationship with his best friend’s sister, Priya. Despite their failed relationship, the two remained friends.
Priya was a good distraction for Leonard, but Priya could feel that Leonard was still in love with Penny. Priya felt that Penny could be a threat to her relationship with Leonard, so she made him choose between his relationship with her and his friendship with Penny. He chose his Priya. Leonard’s relationship with Priya deteriorated when she had to move. The couple tried to make it long distance, but to no avail.
Following the split, Penny and Leonard slowly resume their friendship and later their relationship as well. This time, their relationship was going smoothly and was more stable. Penny even initiated an “I love you” herself. After 7 years of being a waitress and having a failed acting career, Penny lost her way and didn’t know what to do. After some think, she realized she just wanted to be with Leonard and proposed to him. He accepted and gave her a ring that he kept from the time they began dating a second time.
Penny and Leonard’s story is a very complicated one and therefore, very lovable. What some of you might not realize, however, is that the people behind the characters have a story of their own themselves. In 2010, Kaley Cuoco admitted to the public that she had been in a relationship with Johnny Galecki for two years before breaking things off in December 2009. Despite ending their relationship, the two have remained friends and Galecki even attended his former girlfriend’s wedding in December 2013.
Real life imitates art and makes art so much better and so much more interesting. It’s definitely good for business since the “Big Bang Theory” is now on its 8th season and will be on the air for at least 3 more years.
