This weekend a Sierra Leon resident in critical condition was flown to the United States for treatment for the Ebola virus after his spouse, Isatu Salia, made a money deal with the Department of State (DoS) to bring her husband home to the States for medical treatment. Arriving Saturday, Dr. Martin Salia, was rushed to the Nebraska Medical Centre’s biocontainment unit in Omaha where two previous Ebola patients had been successfully treated.
Dr. Martin Salia, a 44-year-old surgeon, has since succumbed to the disease.
“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share this news,” said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the hospital’s biocontainment unit. “Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to save him.”
Salia is the second person to die of Ebola inside of the U.S.. Thomas Duncan, died last month. Eight others have contracted and survived the deadly disease in the States, but the Ebola has now claimed more than 5000 lives in West Africa.
