Fanged Deer Seen For The First Time in 66 Years
This adorably intimidating creature is the Kashmir musk deer. Specifically a male Kashmir musk deer. The musk deer is a species of fanged deer indigenous to central Asia. No members of the species have been seen by scientists since 1948. The animal was not considered extinct, but Kashmir musk deer are endangered due to habitat loss, and poaching.
For some reason, the scent glands of the Kashmir musk deer are highly sought after things. I guess I can’t judge, as I’ve never smelled one of these deer before. Regardless, it’s absolutely not acceptable to kill an animal because it smells good.
Only male musk deer have the fangs you see pictured above. They use their fangs to battle it out with other males during mating season. This deer is not particularly large, standing about two feet tall.
