f4308ee7-11fb-421a-a02f-673849db17f1-bigA wrought iron gate which sat outside the former Dachau concentration camp in Germany was stolen sometime over the weekend.

The piece was 75 by 37 inches, rested within a second, larger gate and displayed the phrase “Arbeit macht frei,” which translates into “Work sets you free.”

Dachau, which was established in 1933, was the first concentration camp set up by the Nazis. The camp held more than 200,000 prisoners, over 40,000 of whom died there.

The camp, which is now set up as a memorial, was liberated by U.S. forced on April 29, 1945.
