Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera is making an “extraordinary” recovery from surgery to fix a hole in his heart, Dr. Carlos Riera Kinkel said.
An irregular heartbeat was detected during Mancera’s annual physical about three months ago, the cardiovascular surgeon said in a press conference at the Centro Medico ABC on Saturday.
“After he (Mancera) had been under medical treatment, it was decided to carry out a planned medical ablation procedure, which was done yesterday (Friday) by a team of doctors with full logistics to deal with any eventuality,” the surgeon said.
“A perforation in the heart was found during the procedure, leading to emergency open heart surgery. Once the operation was successfully completed, he was transferred to the intensive care unit, where his exceptional physical condition has allowed him to have a favorable recovery, beyond what is expected clinically,” Riera said.
Mancera, according to protocol, will remain in the ICU for a set period, Riera said.
“In light of his extraordinary improvement, we consider that he will be able to return to his daily activities in a very short period of time,” the surgeon said.
Federal District Government Secretary Hector Serrano read a message from Mancera thanking Mexico City residents for all “the shows of affection and support” he had received.
