The number of Americans who think having a gun in the house makes it safer has doubled since 2000, according to a new Gallup poll. However, three in 10 Americans say having a gun in the house makes it a more dangerous place.
Sixty-three percent of Americans polled said a gun in the house makes it a safer place to be, 30 percent said more dangerous and 6 percent said it depends.
“Americans who have a gun in their household are significantly more likely than others to say that having a gun makes a home safer, though one in 10 believe it makes a household more dangerous,” the poll said.
For the survey, Gallup interviewed 1,017 registered voters from all 50 states and the District of Columbia over the phone.
Of those surveyed, 42 percent said they have a gun in the home, 53 percent said no, and 4 percent had no opinion. More specifically, 2 percent said they also kept a gun in the garage, barn, shed or vehicle, 52 percent said no, and 4 percent had no opinion.
The majority of those who think guns in a home makes it safer are white, male and republican.
