Fourteen people were killed over the weekend in Puerto Rico to make it the second most violent so far this year, the Caribbean island’s police told Efe on Monday.
Officer Karen Lee Torres of the Police Department’s Communications Division said that the 14 murders were perpetrated between Friday and Sunday.
The number of murders made it the second most deadly weekend in 2014 after the one last February that left 15 dead.
Torres added that the weekend in February extended to four days due to the celebration of Presidents’ Day.
She said that among the crimes last weekend were three double murders, one on Friday in the Hato Rey district of San Juan, the second in the central municipality of Ciales, while the third was in San German on the western end of the island.
Up to now, 564 people have been slain so far this year, 201 fewer than in the same period of 2013.
