Before they committed heinous acts, which made them famous, these 10 serial killers and murderers committed acts of kindness that will shock most people reading this article. Don’t believe us? Well here are the stories:
William Bonin was a serial killer who was active in California in the 1970’s who murdered young men and dumped the bodies along the highway earning the nickname The Freeway Killer (one of three Freeway Killers who coincidently were all active at around the same time, in the same area and given the same nickname by the press). Even before going on his killing spree he was clearly an awful guy, as while serving in Vietnam he had raped two fellow officers at gunpoint, but one good deed he’d done at this stage was the time he risked his own life to save a fellow soldier whilst under fire, for which he received a medal.
Serial killer Arthur Shawcross better known as the Genesee River killer, was a particularly nasty serial killer who murder 14 people, women and children before his arrest in 1990. But whilst serving an earlier sentence this cannibal killer went against his violent instincts and actually saved a life, when a riot errupted after brewing racial tensions, a guard ended up being clubbed by a gang of inmates when Shawcross intervened and saved his life. For his actions he was later given an early release in gratitude.
Dan White became infamous for killing Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. However before becoming reviled for the killings he was once hailed as a hero saving the life of a mother and her baby after rescuing them from a burning building and was due to win an award for it.
Before becoming internationally reviled for his organising protests at soldiers and celebrities funerals, spewing homophobic and generally awful chants, Fred Phelps the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church was deeply involved with civil rights work, helping many African Americans in struggles against racist systems, particularly students to whom were denied proper education due to their race, and victims of racial profiling by police, all of which lead to him winning several awards for his civil rights work.
Ted Bundy was one of the most cold, cunning, charming, and intelligent serial killers ever. He was handsome, charismatic, and the best at manipulating people, especially his victims. Before becoming notorious for his murders of an untold number of young women, serial killer Ted Bundy achieved some amount of acclaim for risking his own life to save a young boy from drowning, for which he was hailed a hero .
Harold Shipman, one of the most prolific serial killers on earth, was sent to Strangeways prison, after his fondness for murdering hundreds of his patients was found out. But in spite of his obvious passion for death, when his cell mate Tony Fleming tried to hang himself in the night, Shipman not only stopped the attempt, he also counselled the man afterwards.
