Our society is always interested in stories of doomsday prophecies. Surely the first apocalyptic prankster is still laughing about how gullible we are over these premonitions. Unable to break away from “end of the world” obsessions, we have compiled a list of the top 10 prophecies everyone must know. Most of us will be familiar with Nostradamus and his predictions. Michel de Nostredame (aka Nostradamus) was a 16th-century French “seer.” who is best known for The Prophecies…But there are others that are as significant. So without further ado, let’s examine the top 10 scariest doomsday predictions.
In 1982, 2 well-knoen astrophysicists, John Gribben and Stephen Plagemann, came up with the preposterous assertion that a rare alignment of all nine planets in 1982 would create a combined gravitational pull that would place huge stresses on the planet’s tectonic plates, causing earthquakes and severe changes to our climates. The book they wrote together, The Jupiter Effect, scared thousands of people/readers. But after the alignment passed without much effect, their professional reputation went down the drain. They later claimed the theory was intended simply as an exercise in astrophysical speculation, but by then the damage was already done.
According to this doomsday theory, in the year 1990 there would be a nuclear war that would eventually lead to the extermination of all living beings on the planet earth. Although there was some logic behind the statements but the moment she and her husband were caught with federal firearms, she was taken into custody and the prophecy was dead.
You would think that the people of London had a lot on their plate to deal with that year (what with the re-emergence of the Plague and all) without having to listen to the scary doomsday shriekings of Quaker Solomon Eccles. Yet, there he was, going around town ranting to anyone who’d listen that the Black Death was merely the opening salvo in God’s planned final assault on the sinful. Like there’s nothing people covered in big, sore, running boils would rather hear than, “Guess what, mate? Now, it’s really gonna get nasty!” Unfortunately for Eccles, the plague started to wind down and left a few people feeling horrible enough to keep his mouth closed.
Considering that the number “1000” is significant in biblical scriptures, it would be hard to imagine entering a millennium with nothing big or grandiose. This contains even more significance for those people who took biblical revolution at face value (since it claimed the end of times in 1000 years). Anyway, the years 1000 CE and 1033 CE were both predicted to be days when the end of the world would take place. These dates were even witnessed in various scriptures from now contested prophets.
The truth regarding 2012 is not as appealing. The Mayans never actually believed that the world would end, and even if they had, it is not clear that it did not happen. The Mayans used an advanced calendar which is measured in baktuns, equivalent to 144,000 days. December 21 2012 marked the beginning of the 14th baktun. The 2012 doomsday prophecy credited to the Mayans dates back to the 1970s. New-age followers of Mayanism began to speculate that a cataclysmic event would take place when the calendar ends on the 13th baktun. Boston University Professor William Saturno has pointed out that the Mayan calendar does not end as it is cyclical, and that some calendars mark out “17 Baktuns”, which gives us at least another 2,000 year
More evidence that we are in the ‘last days’… What we need at this point is more FAITH. Strengthen your faith here… ‘proof’ of God!
