After an almost two-year legal battle, the first commercial indoor shooting range within the city of Atlanta opened last week in west midtown.
Before Stoddard’s Range and Guns opened Dec. 4, the city tried to block it by passing ordnances prohibiting shooting ranges from opening in city limits. However, the owners, two former real estate attorneys, already had permits in place before city council passed the measure, local media reported.
The 34,000-square-foot facility has 24 shooting lanes, and sells a variety of brands of firearms and firearm accessories in its 6,500-square-foot retail section in addition to a 1,000-square-foot Beretta-branded store.
The ATL location is the second Stoddard’s in the area. Owners Michael Halbreich and Ken Baye opened the first location in nearby Douglasville in August 2011.
“We want to create a distinct destination that combines a best-in-class shooting range and a retail store with a focus on service,” Halbreich said.
The shooting range has 16 lanes that run 25 yards in length, and another eight lanes that run 25 meters — the latter are aimed to appeal to international competitive shooters. All 24 are equipped with a number of safety features that the owners say “exceed industry standards,” including an 8-inch thick concrete walls and bullet-resistant viewing windows.
Additionally, the facility is equipped with an ultramodern air filtration system will continuously provide customers with clean air and remove any lingering airborne gunshot residue. Air inside the range will be cleaned through a triple filtration system.
The store will also offer training classes and gunsmithing services. The grand opening was Dec. 4. For more information, check out the company’s website.
