Sexy, Scary, Cool Microchip

A hotly debated topic in recent years has been the practicality, ethicality, and necessity (one way or another) for human microchip implantation – many governments are putting their proverbial feet down and demanding all babied are “chipped” within the next year or so.  With so much conflicting information, I found it interesting that recently, there have been a LOT of very “pro” chip implant articles lately (HERE [1], HERE [2], HERE [3]).

They are a very strange brand of articles that look like they were written by a slick PR person and there is absolutely an undertone of making microchips cool with happy, smiling people – just look at the photo below from an article about a woman who got an impact so she didn’t have to endure the slave-like task of carrying around her work key-card anymore:

In that article, they say of the woman, named Emilott Lantz: “And she’s not the only one to let this particular tech get under her skin. She attended the Sime tech conference in Stockholm, where participants were offered the procedure for free. Around 50 members of a Swedish biohackers group called BioNyfiken had the same procedure done in the past month, according to the Local report.

The handchip technology works in a very simple manner: you place your hand against a scanner and you’re either admitted or your hand begins to glow, then it burns until it falls off. (That sanction was my own futuristic fantasy.)” [1]

See?  It’s funny, it’s cool…. sigh.  That’s why I was happy to find an article by FOX, entitled: “Is there a microchip implant in your future?” and boy, is it a doozey.  Read to the end where they justify microchiping you as “better than having a barcode tattooed to your forehead”.  Read on and let us know what you think!

You can inject one under your skin and no one will ever notice. Using short-range radio frequency identification (RFID) signals, it can transmit your identity as you pass through a security checkpoint or walk into a football stadium. It can help you buy groceries at Wal-Mart. In a worst-case scenario – if you are kidnapped in a foreign country, for example – it could save your life.

[The] implants like the ones pet owners use to track their dogs and cats could become commonplace in humans in the next decade. Experts are divided on whether they’re appropriate for people, but the implants could offer several advantages. For soldiers and journalists in war zones, an implant could be the difference between life and death. A tracker could also help law enforcement quickly locate a kidnapped child.
