A Lifetime Ahead – CopBlock.org Celebrates 5 Years
It was January of 2010, I was back “home” in Jackson, Wisconsin and out for a few drinks with some friends after my seven month trip on Motorhome Diaries. I was explaining to them the strength of social media and how I had experienced this on my travels (see this video of Pete and I being arrested – with our friend Jason – in Mississippi). Having grown up in a small town, and becoming a victim of the war on drugs at an early age, I felt I should start a website and share my personal experiences with police employees.
My friends were respectful, meaning, they listened to me to half drunkenly rant about this idea but their focus was primarily on the young ladies in the bar with us. It was hilarious as my friends were tripping over one another for the same group of girls. This prompted me to say, “Come on guys! We shouldn’t be cock blocking one another, we should be Cop Blocking” We all busted into laughter and the very next day, I created CopBlock – the tumbler blog. I figured not only was it a hilarious name but it was catchy, easy to remember and reflected my purpose when attempting to hold police accountable.
February 22nd, 2010 was the first day a blog post was published to CopBlock.org but the Tumblr blog was around about a month before that. Meaning, we’ve either just passed, or are approaching, the 5 year anniversary of CopBlock.org. Yes, FIVE years, and it still feels like just yesterday when Pete posted his “open carry viddeo from New Mexico.” Which was the first step, just weeks after the launch, we took in transitioning CopBlock.org from a personal blog, about some lame ass from Wisconsin, into one of the most diverse police accountability (decentralized) organizations in the world.
Since I’ve been away from CopBlock.org for the last few years, the credit and/or success of this site is clearly not mine; it’s not any one persons really. There are so many to thank, so much love to give but this blog post would be entirely too long if I even attempted to list them, therefore, I’ll keep this short. Know, no matter the role you’ve played, you’ve made a difference. CopBlok.org has five years in, and things may seem to be getting worse, but we have a lifetime in front of us because Cop Block – the idea – can’t, and won’t, die. The truth will not, it cannot, be buried for ever. Together, we’ve not only kept the idea that, “badges don’t grant extra rights,” alive but we’ve partaken in spreading that message to millions of others and that’s something to be proud of. I know I am, and I hope you are too.
