Europe used to be drama-free, even boring — or so many Americans thought. Those days are gone. Now, every day seems to bring some new craziness.
This week’s focus on quantitative easing drowned out some much bigger news. U.S. troops are going to war-torn Ukraine. Their ostensible mission: “training” the country’s National Guard.
The U.S. is also delivering larger military vehicles to Ukraine’s border guards. As with many government programs, this one’s utility is questionable. Does anyone think this vehicle can face down Russian tanks?

Ukraine may be out of the headlines, but it isn’t out of trouble. President Petro Poroshenko, speaking in Davos this week, said Russian troops are still arming and supporting rebel groups in Eastern Ukraine.
Whether that’s true or not isn’t clear. What is undeniably true is that the U.S. is arming and supporting Ukrainian forces in Kiev. We know this because U.S. government officials say so.
Defense News, a Pentagon-focused website, reported this story Thursday.
WASHINGTON — American soldiers will deploy to Ukraine this spring to begin training four companies of the Ukrainian National Guard, the head of US Army Europe Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges said during his first visit to Kiev on Wednesday.
The number of troops heading to the Yavoriv Training Area near the city of L’viv — which is about 40 miles from the Polish border — is still being determined, however.
The American training effort comes as part of a US State Department initiative “to assist Ukraine in strengthening its law enforcement capabilities, conduct internal defense, and maintain rule of law” Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Vanessa Hillman told Defense News.
Check a map and you’ll see that Lviv is about as far away from Eastern Ukraine as you can get and yet technically still be inside Ukraine. The U.S. troops should be safe there … if that’s really where they will be.
What worries me is that this could be the beginning of a bigger U.S. presence in Ukraine. It looks like Cold War 2 is right on schedule. morehere morehere
