Florida woman sentenced to 20 years for warning shots released from prison (VIDEO)
The Florida woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot at her abusive husband was released Tuesday afternoon to serve out the rest of her time on house arrest.
Marissa Alexander, a 34-year-old mother of three, served two of her 20-year-sentence, the minimum sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which she was given in 2012.
The incident itself occurred in 2010, when she says her estranged husband, Rico Gray, attacked and choked her, and threatened to kill her. In response, Alexander fired a shot near Gray’s head, which penetrated the wall but hurt no one.
Alexander, who had no previous criminal record or arrests, claimed she acted in self-defense and rejected a plea deal.
Alexander’s case is often compared to the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in February 2012.
Both cases were prosecuted by Florida State Prosecutor Angela Corey and many believe the state’s Stand Your Ground law influenced the outcome, but Zimmerman was acquitted for murder.
Moving forward, Alexander will have to wear an ankle monitor, which she has to buy, and will be limited.
