New figures from the U.S. Department of Education put Oregon’s high school graduation rate at the bottom, nationally.
In 2013, Oregon graduated just 68.7 percent of its fourth-year seniors. Only the District of Columbia’s rate was worse.
A big reason why? No state had a worse graduation rate for its white students. Nearly two-thirds of Oregon’s school population is white, but they graduated only 71 percent of the time. Every state’s white graduation rate was at least six percentage points better than that.
In addition, Oregon ranks at or near the bottom for many other groups. Oregon’s 57 percent graduation rate for African-American students was tied for worst, with Nevada. MOREHERE
