Siri is a virtual assistant that uses sequential inference and contextual awareness to help perform personal tasks for iOS users on their Apple Devices. It was re-introduced with a new interface in iOS5. Although it’s no longer an independent app and does not enjoy the same perks, Apple’s Siri is integrated with built-in services like iMessage, Mail, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Stocks, Weather, Music, Safari, and a few external services like Google and Wolfram Alpha. Here are ten cool things Siri could do but you weren’t aware of.
Since the unveiling of iOS 8, Siri has been integrated with Shazam. So now if you absolutely will not rest until you find out what song is playing on the radio or in a bar, no worries, Siri can help. Asking her activates Shazam, and you’ll find out the name of the song.
If you need to find a Note you’ve jotted down or an email on your device in a few seconds or less, Siri can help you with that. Tell her: “Find my note about [word],” and she will search through the whole pile of everything to pull it up for you. Magic. You may need to work on word recognition because not always does she get the phrase right.
Darn it! You forgot about your wedding anniversary and you need to make dinner reservation for you and your wife. Siri can help you do that with ease, as she can tap into Yelp and OpenTable to come up with top-rated restaurants you can dine in. If you have a type of cuisine in mind, you can say something like, “Find the best French restaurant around,” and Siri will list results based on your current location and Yelp ratings. You can also say, “Make reservations for Spruce tonight at 7 pm,” and Siri will tell you what’s available according to the OpenTable app.
This isn’t an official way of checking scores for popular games, but you can say “Yahoo [insert team name” score” to trigger Yahoo’s online sports page in the mobile browser. Siri will open up the browser and show you an overview of the team’s current scores and any related news for the season. I guess people are too bored to type it out. There’s always email notifications for websites and Google News.
You can help Siri listen better by correcting its mistakes. When you issue a command look at the speech bubble that shows what you said. Siri underlines words it’s unsure of in blue. Tap that word and a dialog box offers you alternatives or lets you speak the word once again. Siri becomes more sensitive to your own unique pronunciation over time.
