Fairy tales are stories that feature make-belief characters and imaginary beings like fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, and the like. Although it has fairy on the title, that does not mean the story always features them. The word fairy tales derives from the translation of Madame D’Aulnoy’s conte de fées (Madame D’Aulnoy’s fairy tales). The original readers of these stories were adults just as often as the kids. And the literary stories were made for adults eyes only. Fortunately, the fairy tales became linked to children’s literature during the 19th and 20th centuries. Here is a list of the ten fairy tales with tragic endings.
Are you familiar with the story of The Pied Piper? The tale is actually about Pied Piper who plays music on his pipe. The villagers requested him to play music to get rid of the mouse in the village for a lump sum in return. The story is based on the real life events of a town called Hamelin in the 13th century. In the darker original, the piper takes the kids to a river where they all drown (except for one boy who couldn’t keep up). Some modern scholars also argue that there are connotations of pedophilia in the original story.
Long before the Brothers Grimm popularized “Little Red Riding Hood” as we now know it, 14th century peasants in Italy used to tell another very different story called “La finta nonna”, which means “the false grandmother”. The original version of the story was written by Charles Perrault. The original ending of the story was actually a horrific one for the little girl. There was no grandmother and there was no woodsman in the original version. The little girl in the story was actually eaten by the fat wolf after she foolishly followed all the advice that he gave her. As well, rather than simply eating the girl’s grandmother himself, the werewolf tricks Little Red Riding Hood into joining him for dinner. In some versions, the werewolf even tricks Red Riding Hood into removing her clothes, and then he eats her when they’re in bed. Not much
of a children’s story if you tell me.
There are so many children who really like to watch and read this fair tale. Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale is a 180 degree from the Disney movie. Some parts ar, however, quite similar. She does see the prince from afar, and she does rescue him from drowning and falls in love with him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see her. She does visit the sea witch who takes her tongue in exchange for legs. The mermaid can only remain a human if she finds true love’s kiss and the prince falls in love with and marries her. However, the penalty in the movie is only that Ariel will turn back into a mermaid if she fails. In the story, she will die if the marriage doesn’t work. Which is exactly what happens when the prince falls in love with another woman he believes is the person that saved him. Little Mermaid then turns into foam.
Snow White was a very nice tale. Indeed, there are a lot of children who desire to be just like her. In the Disney film the wicked step-mother died when she falls off a cliff. However, it’s totally different from the Grimm version, though, where the step-mother is tortured by being forced to wear red-hot iron shoes, and made to dance until she falls down dead. The biggest change as well as the bloodiest is step-mom’s bizare eating habits. Namely, when she asks her henchmen to bring back the heart of Snow White, she isn’t just after proof the girl is dead. She wants to eat it. The whole thing about the step-mom being jealous of Snow White’s relationship with the seven dwarfs and giving her a poison apple is true in both stories. As well as Snow going into a coma until a handsome prince rescues her and they live happily ever after.
The Disney film saw a lovely princess put to sleep when she pricks her finger on a spindle. She sleeps for 100 years until a prince comes a long and gives her a kiss and they live happily ever after. However, in the original version written by Basile, the king does not wake upp Talia, the sleeping beauty, with a kiss, but rather rapes her. They have two children and one of them sucks her finger, eliminating the curse. Talia falls in love with the king, but the king’s jealous wife takes their children hostages and orders the cook to kill them and feed them to the king. The jealous queen also threatens to burn Talia to death, but the king has his wife burnt to death. Doesn’t that remind you of King Henry VIII?
The original version of the tale was quite nicer than the new version. The updated version really made it as one of the most gruesome fairy tales. In the new version, Rumpelstiltskin was so that he drives his right foot deep into the grounds and rips himself in half after he grabs his left leg. This original version was really different, Rumpelstiltskin runs away after the lady discovered his name.
