The 90s is considered by some to be the best decade when it comes to music and movies. Many successful musicians, actors, actresses and directors have made a name for themselves today because of a gig they did back in the then. In films, the 90s had one of the best movie break outs in history, hitting high movie reviews and gross earnings. Here are the top 10 movies of the 90s that had the most impact on us today.

 

10. Braveheart

Mel Gibson was known for his versatile, award-winning roles in 1990s; that was before he went on a downward spiral. The story of Brave Heart is about a man who leads a group of Scottish warriors in order to seek revenge for the death of his wife. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards at the 68th Academy Awards and took home five for Best Picture, Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, as well as Best Director. It was met with generally positive reviews.

 

9. Ghost

The 90s started with an iconic performance of the late Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. It was directed by Jerry Zucker. The movie is a story of a man who died after being mugged and found out the whole scene was set up by his best friend Carl who has a love interest for his wife. It was the highest-grossing film of 1990. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards. It won the awards for Best Supporting Actress for Whoopi Goldberg and Best Original Screenplay.

 

8. Titanic

Titanic is the biggest movie ever made in this decade. It won many awards during its time and was received internationally. The story revolves around Rose, a sad English woman who was about to be wed with the wealthiest man on board but was swept away by an aspiring artist who was off to America. Titanic achieved critical and much commercial success. It was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, it tied All About Eve (1950) for the most Oscar nominations, and won eleven.

 

7. Jurassic Park

In 1993, the Jurassic Park franchise was created and hit the A list in such a short period of time. The movie is about a manmade island that was full of dinosaurs that were genetically restored due to a mosquito that was frozen millions of years ago. Jurassic Park was well received by critics, who praised its special effects and Spielberg’s direction but criticized the script. The film won more than 20 awards, including 3 academy awards.

 

6. Saving Private Ryan

This movie is a story about a troop trying to save Private Ryan as a request of his mother because he is the only one left in his blood line. The scene of the movie was during the World War 2 when many Americans lost their lives against the Germans. The impactful movie is notable for its graphic and realistic portrayal of war and for its depict of the Omaha Beach assault of June 6, 1944. It was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry and deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but won only 5.

 

5. Armageddon

A large meteor would hit the earth and the team of Harry Stamper is the only one who could stop it by drilling a hole on the meteor and placing a nuclear bomb. Despite mixed reviews, the movie got us thinking about global warming and the impact we are having on the environment we are living in.
