University active shooter lockdown caused over Brinks guard
A frantic response by police to the campus of Ohio Southern University Wednesday turned out to be just an armored car guard making a money delivery.
As reported by the Ashland Daily Independent, the lock-down, and police response, which lasted 90 minutes, came after a witness reported a man with a gun after 4 p.m. on Jan. 21.
Authorities later reviewed surveillance footage and ascertained that the supposed threat was a Brinks guard dressed in black and armed with a holstered handgun. Apparently, the guard did not have identifying company patches visible.
“We take any reports of this nature very seriously. We instituted the proper protocols for an active shooter emergency situation, although there was never a presence of danger. We are very pleased to have the support of local law enforcement and make every effort to keep our students, staff and faculty safe at all times,” said Southern Campus dean Nicole Pennington in a statement posted on the school’s Facebook page.
This is not the first time that schools have jumped the gun in an abundance of caution. Last August a SWAT team on the campus of California State University San Marcos surrounded a staff member equipped with protective rain gear when his umbrella was mistaken for a rifle.
Authorities have issued an “all clear” for the entire campus and classes have resumed their normal schedule.
