What happens when the hackers hack themselves?
First of all, it is really embarrassing. Secondly, it confirms that the Surveillance State is useless and a hoax. Thirdly, it prompts more calls for even more surveillance on the internet, which in turn, if not sufficiently opposed by the public, will end with the internet as we know it. The latest hacking of US Army servers and computers are a poorly executed attack that is being masked as an ISIS cyber attack on America. The attack was aided by poorly photoshoped images purported to be from the Islamic State. Not surprisingly, the alleged ISIS hackers immediately incriminated themselves, to give the attack some credibility and as a way to help the media find a culprit. But a recent report on a US-based newspaper identifies the origin of the hacking operation in the state of Maryland. The paper cites as a source the self-proclaimed hacktivist organization known as Anonymous, whose twitter account claims to have traced the attack back to that state. Some news websites are already associating the hacking of the US Army to the National Security Agency (NSA), although neither US government officials nor Anonymous itself have confirmed such a thing. Central Command (CENTCOM) computers and social media accounts were taken over by hackers who used them to post ISIS propaganda and to warn members of the US Army that more attacks by Islamic terrorists are coming. “The Twitter and YouTube accounts of the Pentagon’s command for its forces in the Middle East were hacked Monday, according to U.S. Central Command,” reported the newspaper. Computers and social media accounts “were compromised for approximately 30 minutes,” admitted Army Col. Steve Warren, who quickly dismissed the attack as a “prank”. The question is if mundane pranksters are able to hack CENTCOM servers, what could real hackers do? Unless someone at CENTCOM left the door open for the prankster to enter, and whether the accounts were on commercial servers or not, it is quite embarrassing, to say the least, that US Army servers are being hacked so easily. Both the FBI and the White House quickly published statements minimizing the attack. Conversely, the FBI announced that it has opened an investigation with the Department of Defense to determine “the nature and scope of the incident.” The White House defended, the failure to prevent the attack by saying that there is a “significant” difference when it comes to theft of a large amount of data and theft of a Twitter password. “We are still considering the severity of the incident,” said Earnest after learning about the infiltration. Although the US Army and the White House allege that no sensitive information was obtained from the hacking, those involved did make public the names, addresses and other personal information related to US Army staff as well as that of retired servicemen. The group allegedly behind the cyber attack identified itself as the “CyberCaliphate” and after hacking social media accounts it claimed to work on behalf of ISIS, which is hard to believe unless ISIS has a secret operation running in Maryland that has not been detected by the US Surveillance apparatus. This is clearly another staged event to keep the momentum going against alleged Islamic terrorists. The public has already learned that the Paris attack was a false-flag and so the powers that be need a new motive to continue calling for more drastic security an cyber security powers.
