Charlie Hebdo ordered 5 million copies of it’s defiant post-massacre issue to be printed, and the first run of 3 million sold out in minutes. For those who want to know what all the fuss is about, the satirical publication is now available on iPhone, Android and Windows Phone.
Charlie Hebdo normally prints 60,000 copies, and is racing to keep up with public interest.
The Verge cautions that the app is French-only, so dust off that dictionary or head to Google Translate for assistance—although we’re not sure how well algorithms translate satire.
This is clearly a big coup for the newspaper, although it comes at great cost. On January 7, gunmen stormed the publication’s Paris offices, killing the editor and 11 others. Whether people simply want to own a piece of history, show solidarity with the publication, or plan on making a quick buck on eBay, it’s safe to say millions of eyeballs are looking at Charlie Hebdo for the very first time.
