Facebook is an online social media website which was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. Since then, it has become extremely popular among internet users and now has over 1.28 billion active users. Here is how the geography is spread out.
We begin the list with one of the G8 countries: Germany. Germany has 22 million people that are currently active on Facebook. 65-70% of them are between the ages of 18 and 44. This is surprising given that in 2013 Facebook hit some snags in Germany, due to concerns over the social media’s controversial privacy policy.
France is not far behind its neighbour, Germany, with 25 million users. The French have a sweet tooth for things and enjoy engagements on Coca-Cola, Nutella, M&M and Ferrero Rocher brand pages. This may change as the French government has started to crackdown on free speech in the country in the wake of Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks in January, 2015.
No one can resist the breath-taking views of the Philippines islands. Similarly, natives to the Philippines cannot resist the temptation of adding a Facebook account. There are currently 29 million users coming from there. The women take the lead for the most usage.
Turkey arrives at number 7 on this top ten list. In 2014, it had 32 million users who were sharing their lives with each other on the popular social media platform. Unlike in the Philippines, the gender based usage is almost equal. Young adults make up the majority of the usage; between 18 and 35.
Nearly 53% of United Kingdom’s population that uses the internet likes to socialize on Facebook. There are 33 million active U.K users on the popular social network (circa.. 2014) and over half of them are female. Just like the French, the British people have a sweet tooth and most of the brands they like belong to sweets and chocolates brands.
Mexico finds itself in the middle with 38 million people on Facebook. The genders are also quite balanced here. The most liked brands are Corona beer and Coca Cola, which purports that Mexicans really like their drinks. To similar extent, Mexicans like Doritos and PlayStation.
Indonesia is one of the most developing countries in the world that is rapidly moving and adapting to Western culture. In 2014, it had 47.9 million users on Facebook. Most of the users were using it to stay connected to their peers.
India is the second most populated country in the world and arrives at number 3 on this list. It has over 62 million active Facebook users. Most of them are male, around 18 years of age and are immersed in the tech field.
Brazil is one of the ten largest countries in the world and arrives at number 2 on this list with 68 million active Facebook users. Both men and women take equal part in socializing on the social media channel. It’s no wonder that the 2014 World Cup events were so popular on Facebook.
In the United States, 78% of the population has access to the internet and nearly 86% of them are active on Facebook. With over 160 Million Facebook users, America is the number one country in our list and leaves all other countries way behind. Most of the American users are from the age group of 18-34 years. Wal-Mart, Target and Amazon are some of the most liked pages by Americans.
