Baby Mico Tastes Papaya for the First Time

This is baby Mico, a 4 week old marmoset monkey whose family roams wild in the Chapada Diamantina nature reserve in Bahia, Brazil. This is the first time he tasted papaya, and he loved it! Mico was the weakest of 3 babies, and not strong enough to hold on to his mother’s fur. He fell from a high branch on the full moon off 3 February 2015, and his family tried unsuccessfully to get him to hold on properly. He would not have survived the night outside, so we brought him in and have been caring for him for the past 11 days. He is getting stronger every day, and seems very happy and tranquil. We want to return him to his mother when he is strong enough to hold on, but there is very little movement in his back legs – he may have injured his spine when he fell.
