A winner of the 2014 Saltire Award, this property was designed by Dualchas Architects and built on on the Island of Skye in Colbost, Scotland. The layout includes a large, two-volume main home and two smaller structures: a garage and a shed.
The house is divided so that the common rooms are beneath one roof and the private are under another. The public space includes an open plan kitchen, den, and dining room, while the personal side holds just bedrooms and bathrooms. Demarcated by flooring, the communal zone features black tile, whereas the sleeping area is lined in wood. Both halves feature skylights are large glazed windows to let in natural lighting and views of the Dunvegan bay and Waternish peninsula.
There are strong similarities between the domestic and utility buildings as well. All similarly stylized, the rectangular volumes are clad in planks of Siberian larch and finished in black. To top off the look, the roofing is made of corrugated aluminum and conceals the gutters and downpipes for a unified, simple silhouette. The division and placement of the volumes creates a wind-buffered yard in the middle, a much-needed outdoor enclave.
