After news media reported incorrectly that Sweetmyx had received FDA approval Tuesday, Senomyx (SNMX) issued a new statement on Wednesday explaining that the safety designation was issued by a third party, the Expert Panel of the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association of the United States.
The GRAS, Generally Recognized As Safe, designation means the product can be consumed by humans. GRAS determinations can be made without notifying the FDA. IBD and other media incorrectly reported the FDA had issued its approval.
Shares popped 26% on Tuesday after the misleading news that Sweetmyx got regulatory approval, but shares moved down 5% in the stock market Thursday.
The Sweetmyx artificial ingredient enhances sweet flavors like sucrose or fructose so fewer sweeteners are needed in drinks, Senomyx said.
Pepsi has exclusive rights to Sweetmyx in nonalcoholic drinks, and the Swiss company Firmenich has the rights to commercialize the flavor for food and alcoholic beverages. MOREHERE
